Skincare 101-Double Cleansing

Have you heard the term, “double cleansing”?

We are going to discuss the what’s and why’s of double cleansing. Double Cleansing is removing your makeup with a cleansing oil then using typically a foaming cleanser after the cleansing oil. Our skin is pretty amazing but it can’t cleanse itself.  An oil cleanser not only is the most effective at removing makeup but also all the other things your skin was exposed to, in addition to dead skin cells and extra oil. It’s difficult for a gentle facial cleanser to do everything an oil cleanser does and also clean the face.  These cleansers should not leave an oily residue once they are completely rinsed off.  An oil cleanser is designed to clean.

If you are oily it might seem strange to apply an oil to become less oily.  Think of it this way, oil attracts oil.  A cleansing oil can control blackheads and breakouts.  A cleansing oil actually goes into the pore and encapsulates the sebum for easy removal.

How to:

Pump or scoop the oil out and massage it onto your face. Slowly add water onto your face continuing to massage in upward/circular motions. As you add the water the oil will emulsify and turn milky looking. At that point it can be completely rinsed.

Follow with your cleanser.  This can be your favorite cleanser.  Typically, this is a foaming cleanser but it doesn’t have to be.

Cleansing oils can be a liquid or a balm that turns into a liquid product.  As it cleanses it turns into a milky texture.

My absolute favorite oil cleanser is by Shu Uemera.  Here is the link for the Shu Uemura that I love and use.  Shu Uemura has other cleansing oils to choose from as well. $42-$90

Other good oil cleanser choices:

Clinique Take the Day off Cleansing Balm-this cleanser is a solid but turns into an oil.  $28.50

Bobbi Brown Cleansing Oil -starting at $15

Body Shop Cleansing Oil

I picked up the Garnier cleansing oil hoping to find a grocery store/drug store option but I felt that the Garnier had a lot of fragrance.  If fragrances don’t bother your skin this could be an option.  I will continue to look for a less expensive option.

If you are not ready for an oil cleanser but are wanting to double cleanse, Micellar Water would be another option for you.  Here is a link to one of the most popular  Micellar Water.

The oil cleanser as the first step in a double cleansing ritual is the traditional way.
